How to Prepare for Google DSA to AI Max Migration

How to prepare for Google's DSA to AI Max migration?

Google has officially announced that Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) will be migrated to AI Max, with the deadline now set for February 2027. This extension was confirmed by Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin, explaining that the change responds to advertiser feedback and provides more time to prepare while avoiding major account disruptions during the busy Q4 season.

The original DSA retirement was announced on April 15, 2025, with September 2026 as the initial hard deadline. Following advertiser feedback, Google extended that window: January 2027 marks the cutoff for creating new DSA campaigns, and February 2027 is when auto-migration begins. Any remaining active DSA campaigns will be automatically upgraded to Performance Max or AI-powered Search campaigns. This extension only applies to DSA campaigns. ACA-and-broad-match campaigns still migrate to AI Max in September 2026.

Google has released voluntary upgrade tools that allow a one-click transition, preserving historical reporting and minimizing learning-phase disruptions. Advertisers can also run Campaign Experiments to test AI Max performance against existing DSA campaigns before fully committing.

AI Max Performance Data and Independent Testing Results

Google promotes AI Max with impressive statistics—14% more conversions at similar CPA/ROAS, with case studies like Royal Canin achieving 263% more conversions and Klook seeing a 161% increase in conversion value. However, independent testing reveals a more complex reality.

The aggregate numbers look deceptively balanced: median revenue uplift of +13%, but median CPA up +16%, with ROAS ranging from +42% to -35%. Averages hide serious downside risk. AI Max also tends to deliver lower average order value—meaning the customers it acquires may be worth less. Add dynamic bidding inflating CPAs through increased competition and broad query matching pulling in upper-funnel users, and the picture gets complicated fast.

Product Feed Quality and Custom Label Strategy

Feed-based ads account for a median 90% of Performance Max spend, and the independent 250-campaign study found that performance variance tracked closely with feed and conversion-data quality. Campaigns running on thin feeds with weak conversion signals underperformed badly. Those with enriched feeds and reliable conversion data closed most of the gap.

Google’s AI Max for Shopping reads Merchant Center attributes—fabric softness, material durability, fit—to generate ad copy, select landing pages, and choose ad formats. Every incomplete attribute is a missed opportunity to match the right query. Product data optimization has become the price of admission to AI commerce.

Custom labels add another layer of control. Advertisers can segment products across up to five labels (0–4) by seasonality, margin, sales performance, or stock status—then apply bidding strategies tailored to each segment. Feed management tools can automate label assignment, reformat titles, and update descriptions at scale. In an AI-driven environment, the quality of your product data determines how well the algorithm works for you.

Shopify-Google Integration Setup and Feed Optimization

For Shopify merchants, the Google Merchant Center integration handles the transition. The official Shopify-Google integration is a free app handling authentication, automatic product feed sync, basic campaign creation, and conversion tracking pixel injection. Once Merchant Center and Google Ads are linked, Performance Max campaigns can launch directly from the Google & YouTube Shopify app or inside Google Ads.

Google tightened enforcement throughout 2025. The integration now demands stricter data quality, verified business information, and complete policy pages before product approval. Experts recommend auditing Merchant Center for soft attribute completion—material, fit, pattern, product highlights. Anything below 80% completion creates reach problems under AI Max.

This is where feed management tools earn their place. AdFlow’s automated custom label system lets merchants optimize product feeds directly from their Shopify dashboard, automating the segmentation and labeling process that drives AI Max performance. Rather than manually managing attributes and custom labels across hundreds of SKUs, merchants can ensure feeds hit the quality thresholds AI Max requires—then launch optimized shopping campaigns without leaving their Shopify environment.

Feed quality is the make-or-break factor in the AI Max era — and Adflow is built to give you the edge.

As Google’s AI-driven campaigns lean ever more heavily on your product data, every missing attribute is a missed opportunity. Adflow’s AI-powered platform automatically optimizes titles, descriptions, and images, detects and fills missing attributes like color and material in real time, and applies dynamic custom labels to segment your inventory by margin, seasonality, and performance — the exact levers that determine winners and losers in AI Max campaigns. Synced seamlessly with Google Merchant Center and launchable directly from your Shopify dashboard, Adflow turns your feed into your strongest competitive asset. Don’t let thin data cost you conversions.
